Bagga T also known as Jah Melodie has become a bit of an obscure artist in the roots and dub scene these days. 15-20 years back he was a prominently present first as mc on King Shiloh system. Thereafter as recording artist on productions by Slimmah Sound, Shiloh Ites and ofcourse myself, Unlisted Fanatic. He took a step back from the soundsystem scene in 2012 to focus on other things. He stayed a dear friend of mine, we don’t see each other often but we stay in touch. We have a body of work that never got finished (I still have good hopes it will one day) but actually our interaction is mostly about records and music in general.

Opening Up was constructed in the fall of 2019 at Bagga’s place in Amsterdam. I went for a weekend and took some gear to jam. Bagga isn’t writting much anymore but he’s still singing when he feels like it. ‘Opening up’ is an old campfire / rainbow gathering hymn that is stuck in his head and a regular chant to sing. The lyrics are simple but the message is pure and profound. So we gave it a go to make our own version. Starting from scratch I build up the riddim as Bagga was shaping the vocals and hitting the binghi drum. Through a gathering in our own way “Opening Up” came to life in a way we wouldn’t have imagined. A simple but deep message of openness, contemplation and rising above one self, the trails & tribulations of life, a higher purpose … The song is dear to me so only natural it had to be shared to the world. I hope you like it too.
